Charleston Municipal Golf Course

Seth Raynor’s influence on the Charleston golf scene can be felt throughout the region. In the early 1920s, Raynor designed both Yeamans Hall and Country Club of Charleston, two world-class designs in the city. Around the corner from CC of Charleston you will find the Charleston Municipal Golf Course, known as “Muni” to the locals.

Originally built in 1929, the course has long served as the stomping ground for the city’s hungry public golf scene. But due to its low-lying location, a portion of the course routinely flooded during heavy rains, and it was suffering from misuse. That is, until local architect Troy Miller stepped in with an idea. Miller and his team proposed and executed a renovation of the course that not only improved drainage and made it more resistant to flooding, they restyled the course with Raynor characteristics. Today, the Muni is still the bustling public golf hub of Charleston, but also reflects the character of some of the best golf in the area.

Built on extremely flat land, Muni uses extremely bold green complexes and features to infuse intrigue into its design, much like an actual Seth Raynor golf course. The catch: Muni’s features are the size and budget of a municipal golf course. Throughout the course you’ll find a series of Raynor template holes in a Double Plateau (No. 1), Eden (No. 4), Punchbowl (No. 6), Biarritz (No. 8), Redan (No. 11), Cape (No. 12), Road (No. 13), Short (No. 14), and Maiden (No. 15). Each of these holes demand extreme precision on your approach shots, especially when the pin is tucked on a shelf or the area has gone through a dry spell. Because while the course is certainly still susceptible to rainstorms off the ocean, dry conditions and proper maintenance practices often make Muni a lightning-fast test of golf.

What makes Charleston Municipal truly special is the feeling you have when you’re on site. Despite a big golf course renovation, the clubhouse is still a simple pro shop and snack shack. The staff are all locals who have been on site for many years. The local men’s club, known as the “Little Rascals,” has been playing every Friday for decades. On Saturday morning, you’ll find the same group of gentlemen having coffee on the porch at 7:00 a.m. sharp. The Muni is one with the city, both in design and in environment.
