Dannebrog Country Club

Before modern irrigation systems, it was common for golf courses to have sand greens as a practical and inexpensive option to play the game. The semi-arid climate found in central Nebraska has lent itself to 20 different sand green courses, including the wonderfully unique Dannebrog Country Club. For just $4 you can play the sand greens of Dannebrog, located just north of Grand Island and Interstate 80. Eight of the sand greens are surrounded by a barbed wire fence, and the 125-yard par-3 second hole is surrounded by a four-foot-high tin grain bin that forces players to loft shots over the wall onto the green. Two-sided metal rakes are used to smooth out a path in the sand for you to putt, and upon completion of the hole, the tooth side of the rake is dragged in a spiraling path to flatten the footprints for the next group. 

Dannebrog provides a special experience for those who have never played on sand greens before. The course plays over nearly flat, raw prairie land, adding to the charm of the course. I’m almost certain that not a single thing was done to the landscape to create the holes. A small winding creek cuts through the first four holes, creating some interest, but the course is more of a step back in time to a bygone era of the simplest form of the game. Dannebrog is a place that any golfer must experience at least once in their lifetime.

Free range. Not too long ago, cattle roamed the same prairie that the golf course occupies. This is why all of the sand greens are surrounded by barbed wire fences or a grain bin.
