Right on the edge of town, Frederick Peak Golf Club is a community hub that creates an entryway for newcomers to the game while also providing a thought-provoking design with dramatic elevation changes. The course gets its name from the prominent peak just north of the property that’s visible from most of the 10 holes. Weekly leagues, special events, and practice grounds for high school golfers make this a valuable asset to the community and traveling golf enthusiasts alike. Those visiting the nearby Prairie Club or CapRock Ranch should dedicate time to visit Freddy’s, as it’s referred to by locals.
The first four holes, plus the 10th, play up on the flatter high ground, while the most visceral golf holes, Nos. 5-9, traverse severely undulating terrain and steep cliff edges. Most notably, the par-3 fifth plunges 60-plus feet down to a green benched between a dune and hillside. The architecture is sound throughout, with interesting greens that create intrigue for more experienced golfers while also welcoming beginners with plenty of short grass to run the ball along the ground. The severity of the terrain makes the course unfriendly to walkers, but that shouldn’t deter any purists from visiting this unique and affordable design.
Take Note…
Bonus golf. While Freddy’s is listed as a 10-hole course, it’s technically a standard nine-hole layout with a bonus hole. The 120-yard bonus “eighth” hole is perched on a ledge halfway down the cliff edge I touched on earlier, which makes for a dramatic setting. It’s a really neat short par 3 that requires a high level of precision and provides one of the best views of Frederick Peak.
Spreading the wealth. Prairie Club founder Paul Schock was the main proponent pushing the creation of Frederick Peak to the City of Valentine, ultimately making the course a reality. Not only did it create an affordable option for locals, but it also helps drive more tourists to the city, versus just visiting the resort 20 miles south of town.
