Mullen Golf Club
Drop $20 in the honor box and play all day at Mullen, a modest nine-holer built by locals, for locals
A modest nine-holer just outside of town, Mullen Golf Club is a terrific asset to the local community and visitors alike. Like many of the other local nine-holers in the region, a small structure and honor box act as the “pro shop.” Sign your name, slip in your $20, and play the course all day as much as you’d like. (If you can donate more money than is required, please do, as the course is maintained by volunteer work. A few extra bucks certainly go a long way.)
The original course was established and built by locals in 1924, but by 1938 the course had moved to its current location. The locally designed course remained for nearly 55 years as sand greens before Marty Johnson of South Sioux City, Nebraska, built formal greens that were sodded with bentgrass in 1992.
The course occupies more gentle rolling land for the Sandhills region, but still provides interesting golf holes that play up, down, and across large slopes. The greens lack significant interest, but the tilt of the putting surfaces and bouncy course conditions provide a fun test of golf. The Sand Hills Golf Club maintenance team provides aid in the upkeep of the course. Mullen is a spot for locals to escape to after work and enjoy recreational play, likely with a Busch Light in hand. At its core, Mullen is a delightful walk and worthwhile stop for anyone either passing through town or those who score a tee time at the more famous clubs in the area.
Take Note…
Coach. Nebraska high school football legend Mike Brown – often referred to as Coach – maintains Mullen Golf Club, otherwise known as “The North Course,” referring to its relationship to Sand Hills. Brown coached the Mullen Broncos for 35 seasons and collected three state championships and 20-plus playoff appearances. You can find him and his impressive handlebar mustache at one of two places: Ben’s Porch at Sand Hills or the grounds of “The North Course.”
Bunkerless. Yes, there are no sand bunkers on this golf course. It may seem odd in a region literally made of sand, but this helps to keep maintenance costs down and also proves that a simple design can produce quality golf. The holes are routed over interesting landforms, giving each hole its own identity without the need for flashy bunkers.
