about

Ireland’s County Donegal is arguably the most remote section of the island as far as golf is concerned. Travelers may be familiar with the Rosapenna Resort or Ballyliffin, but much of the other clubs in the area are remote and under the radar. Included in that bunch you’ll find Portsalon Golf Club.

A seaside links in a holiday town (vacation town to us daft Americans), Portsalon is nothing if not off the beaten path. The club is over an hour from the two nearest cities of Derry and Donegal and is just mere kilometers from the northernmost point of Ireland. That said, its location is absolutely stunning. A mix of dunesland and rocky terrain, there is a reason that this area is frequented by those looking for a little rest and relaxation.

Originally laid out in the late 1800s, Portsalon has seen a series of adjustments and renovations in recent decades to keep up with its more well-known neighbors. A couple of new par 3s have been built and discussions are ongoing for future changes. More on those in a second. Still, so far, the club’s modifications haven’t altered the small-town feeling around the club. Visitors will be greeted by a friendly staff and minimal flair, and you won’t find a big restaurant or fancy driving range. At Portsalon, the golf course does the talking.

Take Note...

Let’s go to the beach. While public paths and beach access are common on and around courses in the UK and Ireland, you probably haven’t come across beach access like the one at Portsalon. Running through the first and 18th fairways you will find a walking path that is protected by a metal cage. This path leads from the road to Ballymastocker Beach. Beachgoers (that you can see) literally walk underneath you as you play!

Rent or buy. While Portsalon Golf Club has been in its current location for over 130 years, the club didn’t actually own its land until 1986! The Costello Hotel Group owned the land, along with an inn on property, but sold the land on which the course sat to the membership. The modern-day clubhouse was built soon thereafter and opened in 1991.

Safety is our top priority. One of the changes that is under consideration at Portsalon, and seems likely at this point, is a complete elimination of the current home hole. Pressed right up against the road with a net already protecting cars for now, the club has a plan to eliminate this hole entirely. The 17th would be extended and repositioned to become the closing hole.
