Refined Rory McIlroy Avoids Tailspin at 2026 PGA Championship

The world No. 2 found some grit and guile on Saturday

Rory McIlroy stood on the 17th green Saturday, shortly after trickling in a short bogey putt, and stared into the abyss for a solid minute. He had time to kill. McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, was raking the bunker that his boss had just made a mess of, and instead of hustling to the next tee, McIlroy was going to wait. He needed a minute to collect his thoughts.

The entire afternoon felt like walking on a knife's edge. His patience was waning. McIlroy played great in stretches during the third round of the 2026 PGA Championship (preposterously driving the 397-yard sixth hole to set up a birdie), but he also let his concentration lapse just a bit in the closing holes. He would have to settle for a good round (66) after flirting with something spectacular.

McIlroy said afterward that he wanted to post a number that the leaders would have to chase — 5-under par — maybe even get himself into the final pairing. If he could just play the last three holes in 1 under, he figured he might do it. He’d come all the way back from a dreadful first round 74, and to have a share of the lead going into Sunday would be sublime.

It didn’t play out that way. First, he failed to birdie the par-5 16th hole, struggling to get up and down after his second shot hit the green but trickled right up against the rough. Then he dumped his approach into the front bunker on 17, watching in dismay as the ball plugged on the upslope, leaving him an awkward shot that he barely got out of the bunker. He managed to salvage a bogey with a delicate chip, but he seethed in silence as he waited for Diamond to finish raking. He could feel the round starting to slip away, and all his hard work being erased.

On 18, he nuked a drive downwind, but pushed it a hair right. It looked destined for the bunkers, but he carried them 340 yards in the air. McIlroy’s ball nestled down in the rough, leaving him very little chance to reach the green. He punched a low approach toward the green, but it landed in the rough, leaving him well short and in a tough spot. Another bogey seemed inevitable.

Instead, McIlroy dusted off some of the grit and guile that helped him win the Masters back in April. He hit one of the best chips of the day, then poured in a seven-footer and pumped his fist. If McIlroy ends up winning his third PGA Championship, he might think back on that moment when he seemed to be spiralling but pulled out of a tailspin. There have been times in his career when he let those moments slip away. Not this year.

“I feel like I’ve still got a good chance,” he said.

McIlroy wasn’t all that interested in another day of setup discourse. Asked if he thought Saturday was fairer than Friday, he walked back some of his takes.

“Look, when you have a set of greens like this, you can start to frustrate people pretty easily, I think,” he said. “You heard it from me last night. You heard it in Scottie. I saw some of his comments. I think there was a lot of guys that were frustrated yesterday coming off the course. Again, it's frustrating to us, but at the same time, it creates a helluva entering championship. If I wasn't playing this tournament, I'd love what's going on this week, but watching and playing are two different things.”

The leaderboard on Sunday is going to resemble a crowded street bazaar, with possibly two dozen contenders jostling for position. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a major championship like it. Only one, however, has a chance to win a second consecutive major.

McIlroy said he planned to watch The Dark Knight before going to sleep Saturday night. He started it on Friday, but didn't finish it. It’s a regular exercise for him.

“That's one of my go-tos to try to forget about things,” he said.

Whether Aronimink gets the hero it deserves or the hero it needs on Sunday probably depends on your perspective. Either way, the chaos should be fun to sort through.
