Will’s Official Weekly Golf Ranking, Vol. 2023.4

You're the real winner if you somehow managed to avoid the great tee tiff of 2023

Despite most of the week being dominated by discussion of tees and the ways in which they can be strewn about, especially in relation to the proximity of other golfers, WOWgr will attempt to keep tee talk to a minimum.

Need a recap on the WOWgr rules?

Vol. 2023.4

No. 1 – You, if you somehow haven’t heard of “Teegate (Up 2,000 spots from last week) – Teegate will certainly go down as the dumbest controversy of 2023 and most golf fans have certainly heard it by now. If you keep a productive life and don’t waste away on social media like many of us, congratulations, you’re the top dog this week.

No. 2 – Jon Rahm (Down 1) – He’ll need a hell of a weekend to win three events in a row but Rahm is playing incredible golf right now. You have to figure a couple good rounds on the South Course at Torrey Pines will almost certainly earn him yet another top-10 finish. I speak your name, Jon Rahm.

No. 3 – Rory McIlroy (Down 1) – Good on ya for refusing to give this reporter the time of day. Also, welcome back to professional golf.

No. 4 – Farmers Insurance Open Caddies (Up 810) – One year ago today, your parking lot was being bombarded with golf balls because Bryson DeChambeau decided to go full Hulk and smash drives over the net. With his departure to LIV, you’re in the clear!

Source on the ground informs us that Bryson shattered two caddies’ cars windshields when he started “shipping balls over the fence.”

No. 5 – My hopes and dreams (Up 208) – Vincent Norrman, a PGA Tour rookie, is in contention through two rounds at the Farmers Insurance Open. The idea of writing “Norrman wins on the PGA Tour” given everything going on in the world of golf has me all sorts of excited.

No. 7 – The HJ Glove (Up 1,222) – Truly the most absurd product name in the history of names, this product rears its head every year during the PGA Show in Orlando.

No. 15 – Breaking News (Up 415) – This is a shameless plug for Club TFE, but yesterday Andy broke some news about a new golf course project we’re pretty excited about. If you’re a member, check it out. If you’re not, fix that.

No. 43 – Ben Silverman (Up 99) – Not only did Silverman shake off a 72nd hole double bogey and come back to win the Great Abaco Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour, he won an honorary membership at the golf course. Imagine being a 35-year-old journeyman who is grinding to get back to the PGA Tour and you happen to win a golf membership in the Bahamas on the side? What a boon!

No. 464 – Rocco Mediate (Down 54) – Unfortunately for Rocco, Torrey Pines week means he has to re-live Tiger’s epic comeback victory to win the 2008 U.S. Open at Mediate’s expense. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch Tiger’s putt to force a playoff a couple times.

No. 987 – Annika Sörenstam (Down 342) – I don’t care how good of a player Mardy Fish is, you cannot lose the celebrity division of the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions when it’s being played on your home golf course.

No. 1,444 – Ryder Cup hopes for LIV Players (Down 23) – Not that they were ever high to begin with, but the idea that LIV players could potentially still play in the Ryder Cup has taken a couple hits recently. Last week, Jon Rahm said on the No Laying Up Podcast that it isn’t looking like LIV players will be able to participate. Sky Sports’s Jamie Weir also did a recent interview with 11-time Ryder Cup participant Nick Faldo in which Faldo basically assures that European LIV players won’t be in Italy this fall.

DFL – Patrick Reed (Down 1) – Between Greg Norman and Talor Gooch, Reed isn’t going to be the most tone deaf LIV associate. However, he can be in the running. Following the tee incident, Reed said, “It is one of those things, if you’re going to act like an immature little child then you might as well be treated like one.” C’mon man.

About the author

Will Knights

Golf was a big part of my upbringing as I grew up with a PGA Professional as a dad. I went to the course with him in the morning, helped out in the pro shop, caddied, and ultimately played golf in college before helping out in the early days of Fried Egg. While I’ve been involved in many different aspects of our organization over the years, today you’ll largely find me at our events and helping our membership as our Community Manager. And while I love this position, my dream job will always be starting shortstop for the Chicago Cubs.
