The Players Championship Isn't A Major. That's Okay!
It doesn’t need a label to be an essential part of the game’s history

Every few years, we reheat a debate that feels like it will never die, one that cannot be squashed or even put to bed: Is the Players Championship worthy of being considered a major?
We know, by now, the discussion is little more than bait — another thing to yell about on social media that juices engagement and helps the provocateurs laugh all the way to the bank. Yet we can’t resist taking the bait. Just when we thought it was settled for good, the PGA Tour brought it back to life this spring like a reanimated zombie that keeps returning to be part of a lucrative movie franchise.
What gets lost is the realization that the Players no longer needs such boosterism. The tournament has, by every measure, stood the test of time. Great players have won it, and great moments have unfolded here, earning their place in the annals of the sport.
It doesn’t need a label to be an essential part of the game’s history.
