Q&A: Jay Blasi on Redesigning Poppy Ridge and San Francisco Golf
Jay Blasi
The son of a Beverly Country Club caddie, Jason “Jay” Blasi was born in suburban Chicagoland in 1978. His father was an established figure at Beverly — so much so that the club’s superintendent built a backyard practice putting green for the Blasi family. Growing up constantly around golf, Blasi read books about golf architecture in high school and studied landscape architecture at the University of Wisconsin. He got his first taste of the industry working for golf architect Kevin Norby in Minneapolis during a summer in college. In his senior year, Blasi wrote to a variety of architects asking for work but quickly found that jobs in the industry were scarce.
In September 2001, a year after graduating, Blasi joined Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s popular golf architecture firm. He had already become an important associate by January 2004, when Jones got the job to transform a sand and gravel quarry in University Place, Washington, into a links-style golf course meant to host championships. Blasi played a key role in building what is now known as Chambers Bay, one of the country’s boldest and most innovative municipal courses. Chambers Bay opened in 2007, and the USGA awarded it the 2015 U.S. Open. He also completed other projects with RTJII, including the Siebel Varsity Training Complex for the Stanford University golf program (2008) and The Patriot Golf Club (2010) near Tulsa, Oklahoma. He went on to help with renovations of Jones Jr. originals at CordeValle (2010) and SentryWorld (2014).
Upon forming his own architecture firm in 2012 in Los Gatos, California, Blasi had a chance to forge his own identity as a designer, separate from Jones's influence. His first major project was an overhaul of Orange County’s Santa Ana Country Club (2016), essentially an original design. Blasi became busy in the post-Covid era, with a C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor-inspired overhaul of Lakeside Country Club in Houston (2023) and a redesign of the nine-hole par-3 course at Golden Gate Park (2024). He then spearheaded a redesign of the Northern California Golf Association-owned Poppy Ridge Golf Course (2025), his highest-profile solo project to date. His in-progress projects include renovations of Burl Oaks Golf Club near the Twin Cities, Denton Country Club north of Dallas/Fort Worth, and Sequoyah Country Club in the hills of Oakland, California.
