Can Anyone Challenge Rory McIlroy at the 2026 Masters?

A historic lead will be put to the test this weekend

At the start of the week, if you said you thought Rory McIlroy would be leading the Masters after 36 holes, it would have felt like a bold but not outlandish prediction. Only three men in history (Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods) have won back-to-back Masters, but McIlroy has always possessed enough talent to enter that conversation.

It would have been much harder to predict that McIlroy would not only arrive at the halfway point with a six-shot lead, but that he would get there (inexplicably) without playing his best golf.

As surreal as it sounds, McIlroy has the largest 36-hole lead in Masters history. The scorecard tells only a slice of the story. McIlroy has struggled often with his driver through two rounds, frequently missing fairways. He has not found one on a par 5 yet this week. But his wedges and his putting have been superb thus far, another sign that he is a more complete player than he was back in 2011 when he first contended for a green jacket.

MASTERS HUB: Course insights, tournament coverage, and more from Augusta

McIlroy made nine birdies on Friday — including on Nos. 13 and 15 when he had to punch out of trouble and try to wedge it close — and he appears to be separating from the field on a firm and fast golf course. But nothing displayed his touch and artistry better than what unfolded on the 17th hole late in the afternoon. After a wayward drive forced him to punch his approach low under some tree branches and well right of the green, McIlroy stunned everyone on property by holing out from 29 yards for his fifth birdie in six holes.

“Obviously that was a bonus that it went in,” McIlroy said. “Just an amazing end to the round. When I was standing on the 12th tee, didn’t imagine I’d be six ahead going into the weekend.”

McIlroy made one final birdie on 18 just to put an exclamation point on his round and post 65. It’s his lowest score at the Masters since his opening round in 2011.

There is still a long way to go. His driver may remain a concern. McIlroy has had trouble closing at Augusta, as everyone knows. But that may also be a narrative of the past. Through two rounds, McIlroy is making the case that he is not only at the top of his game, but the gap between he and Scottie Scheffler is no longer as wide as it seemed. -Kevin Van Valkenburg

Who Are the Challengers?

If McIlroy continues to play well, contenders are irrelevant. We are potentially looking at a Tiger Woods-in-1997-level performance here. But if he falters, Patrick Reed might be the best candidate to take him down. Reed, who sits at 6 under, has been here before. He and McIlroy have a history of tussling in big moments, including at the 2018 Masters. McIlroy will be paired with Sam Burns on Saturday, but Reed and Justin Rose (5 under) feel like the most serious contenders, if there are any. -Kevin Van Valkenburg

Scottie Scheffler Splashes into Neutral

For four straight years, if you wanted to win the Masters you were going to have to deal with Scottie Scheffler, or at least the spectre of the world No. 1. We are simply at the midpoint of this year’s Masters, and one of those roaring announcements may soon come on the weekend, but so far he is stuck in neutral at Augusta National.

To use a word, Scheffler has been inefficient, missing chances and giving away a shot here and there with slightly imprecise short game plays, like at the second and third holes during Friday’s second round. He also failed to get up and down from the sand at the fourth, and kicked away a great par chance on the fifth with a three-putt after he’d done all the hard work to find a good spot off the fringe at that difficult hole.

When it looked like one of those second nine 30s could come, he dumped a high draw that stayed too far out to the right into the water to wash out a birdie chance at the par-5 13th. He got wet again at the par-5 15th with the same club, this one a fade that went long. Another less charitable word to describe his first two days could be sloppy. Scheffler is always looming at Augusta, but the last two months have not been his strongest, and now he’s opened up some breathing room for the rest of the contenders at a place where he’s often had a chokehold. -Brendan Porath

Team Rose

The most surprising aspect of the Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, and Brooks Koepka group was that the fan support mostly favored the two-time playoff loser and Englishman Rose. For the first eight holes, it looked as though Friday might be a redux of his third round in 2025, when his putter cost him a green jacket. Following a demonstrative reaction after missing his birdie look on the eighth, things clicked for Rose, and he was off to the races. After a sensational tee-to-green round, he finds himself at 5 under. He’ll need a similar effort to his Sunday round from 2025 (and some help from Rory) if he wants to join Koepka and Spieth as multiple major winners. -Andy Johnson

Did We See the Line?

Thursday afternoon presented an absolute fever dream for golf purists as Augusta National baked out to as firm a test as we have seen in years. It saw some of the best players in the world struggling to hold greens with wedges and scores ballooned. Friday saw a slightly softer test as the club put down water to create more scoring opportunities. It seemed to me the green jackets got to the line of where they were comfortable presenting the course on Thursday afternoon. A big question heading into a hot, dry weekend will be how comfortable and close they are to getting back to those first round conditions.

Perhaps a product of a Masters sans heavy rain for the first time in 15 years is that the golf course is playing differently than most players have ever seen. It’s strange after 36 holes to look at the leaderboard and see three first-timers in the mix: Kristoffer Reitan (4 under), Ben Griffin (3 under), and Chris Gotterup (3 under). After his round, Griffin spoke about how on Thursday he bucked the advice of pushing his layup close on 13, a hole that gave many troubles to those who laid up close to Rae’s Creek, including Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas. With the firm conditions, the half wedge shots couldn’t garner enough spin to hold the green, but Griffin left himself a full wedge and was able to hold the green en route to a birdie. It will be fascinating to see if any of the trio can make a weekend run. -Andy Johnson

Jon Rahm Limps Into Weekend

Rahm was a trendy pre-tournament pick, but after he shot his worst round ever in a major on Thursday (77), Friday became an anxious cut watch for the 2023 Masters champion. Rahm said he knew what was wrong with his swing most of Thursday, but the course was playing so difficult, he didn’t feel comfortable trying to tweak it mid-round. He felt a bit better on Friday, shooting a 2-under 70, but so far it looks like another disappointing major for the Spaniard. “I'm going to need an absolute miracle starting today, and didn't quite do enough,” he said. -Kevin Van Valkenburg
