In Praise of Aronimink's Violent and Beautiful Green Complexes

The scariest proposition in the game of golf is gravity, not a meaningless number on the Stimpmeter

In the run-up to the 2026 PGA Championship, players, pundits, and media members for the most part expected a bomb-and-gouge birdie fest. Through two rounds, it’s been quite the opposite, with Aronimink punishing errant tee shots and delivering a stout test of golf that requires accurate tee shots, pinpoint iron play, and a deft touch on and around the greens.

How it’s accomplishing this despite good-but-not-great topography and length on the card (7,400 yards) is worth a study.

Aronimink’s star asset is its violent and beautiful green complexes. These are its chief defense. The last time we saw Aronimink in the 2018 BMW Championship, it was soaked with a biblical week of rain, softening and muting the impact these surfaces could have on play. This week’s relatively dry forecast has allowed the greens to create ideal angles of approach and reward accurate tee shots that find the fairway. Get those wrong and you’ll be punished.

Why are these greens able to inflict such consequences compared to regular PGA Tour venues? Intense slopes. At Aronimink, it’s not uncommon to encounter 20-foot putts that break eight feet. The hole locations are in tiny pockets surrounded by severe slopes. On most courses, those pockets would be relatively flat internally. At Aronimink, however, they are fairly tilted in themselves. These dynamics make putting a real challenge from beginning to end, which we rarely see on Tour, or even in majors. The results are staggering. Per Jamie Kennedy, in round one, Aronimink produced 127 three-putts. To put this in perspective, Augusta National’s revered greens produced 190 three-putts during the entire 2026 Masters.

Beyond putting, these greens also have a big impact on shots around the green. Justin Ray pointed out on X that the average proximity on shots around the green on tour in 2026 is 7’4”. In round one at Aronimink, it was 11’1”.

The modern game has often pushed an emphasis on green speed over slope, but this week is showcasing how slope and gravity remain the best way to challenge pros. During the renovation of Memorial Park Golf Course, now an annual PGA Tour host, Tom Doak and his talented crew of shapers were instructed by the Tour not to exceed 1.75 degrees of slope in pinnable areas. This week, I think you would be hard-pressed to find four hole locations on each green that come close to that number.

It’s strange that golf has this absurd fascination with fast greens instead of sloped greens. Hopefully this week reminds fans and the powers that be that the scariest proposition in the game of golf is gravity, not a meaningless number on the Stimpmeter.
