LIV Golf's Passion for Pants, Not Performance

One of LIV Golf’s most popular social media posts this weekend featured Ian Poulter breaking out the Union Jack pants for Majesticks GC’s home game event on the LIV schedule. Of course, the viral trousers immediately became one of the more notable contributions from Poulter and the Majesticks to the LIV season. And that’s fine, it’s good to be cheeky, have some fun, and display some character.

What’s not fine is that people care more about the pants than the fact that the Majesticks are, and have been since LIV’s creation four years ago, an abject failure. They languished in DFL, 13th out of 13 teams going into Sunday’s final round. They’ve taken up residence alongside Korean Golf Club (RIP, Iron Heads GC) at the bottom of the standings throughout LIV’s existence.

England’s soccer manager Thomas Tuchel was widely ripped and shamed in a wave of recriminations for his decisions in the team’s loss to Argentina at the recent World Cup. If LIV had truly succeeded, and mattered, perhaps there would have been some passion about the Majesticks’ sorry state on the field of play as they came home. Poulter would be mocked, booed, ridiculed for playing dress-up while his team fails to do anything of substance. But this isn’t about substance, is it? So we have passion for pants over performance.
