“Wait, it’s all PIP?” “Always has been.”

The Brooks-Bryson feud takes on a kayfabe flavor, and Ole Miss women’s golf achieves a school first

“Wait, it’s all PIP?” “Always has been.”
“Wait, it’s all PIP?” “Always has been.”

Is a Golf Boyz diss track on the horizon?

I did it all for the PIPpy

The latest chapter in the feud between Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, which started on Monday evening with the interview outtake seen ’round the world, reached its peak on Wednesday with Koepka and DeChambeau trading barbs on social media. Brooks fired the first shot, and Bryson replied with a stale taunt and some dumb memes. Even Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady #gotinvolved. It all seemed… kind of chummy? Scripted?

Look, it’s common knowledge that Koepka and DeChambeau don’t get along. Brooks’s eye-rolling, sighing, cursing response to Bryson’s mere presence—that was genuine! But when the video went viral, the rivalry suddenly became a valuable media property, especially now that the PGA Tour is dangling millions in front of its top players for “fan and sponsor engagement.” Few things can turn enemies into friends faster than the prospect of making a ton of money together.

So Brooks v. Bryson is still a fun WWE-style sideshow, but if it becomes a fully branded enterprise at some point, we wouldn’t be surprised.

Meanwhile, Golf Channel is working to memory-hole the rogue clip, and reporters like Dylan Dethier of Golf dot com are trying to figure out how in the world it got leaked.

Can’t Miss

On Wednesday at the NCAA women’s golf championship, the University of Mississippi defeated Oklahoma State in the match-play finals to deliver Ole Miss’s first ever national title in a women’s sport. The key showdown came in the leadoff match between OSU star Maja Stark and Ole Miss standout Kennedy Swann. It was a back-and-forth affair that ended on the 17th hole when Swann stuck a wedge to gimme range and Stark missed a six-footer to tie. Results

Swann, a senior who plans to turn pro, has accepted an exemption to the LPGA Tour’s Marathon Classic in July.

As usual, Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine, the rare reporter who covers the amateur game full time, has the gamer you should read. The men’s championship gets underway at Grayhawk Golf Club today, and the final round of stroke play will air on Golf Channel on Monday.

As the Brooks-Bryson fracas raged on Wednesday, Turner Sports (in what we’re sure was a totally coincidental bit of timing!) announced the fourth edition of Capital One’s The Match, which will take place on July 6 at the Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Montana. Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady will team up against Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers, and the event will air live on TNT. Press Release

Two notable Texans, Jordan Spieth and Sergio García, are tied for the lead after round one of the Charles Schwab Challenge. Forty-one-year-old Erik Compton, who has undergone two heart transplants, is two shots back at T-3. Leaderboard

With strong storms moving into Tulsa, first-round play at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship was suspended at 3:48 p.m. local time. Steve Stricker, three under through seven holes, is tied atop the leaderboard with Alex Cejka, who finished with a 67. Leaderboard

During the first round of round robin at the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play, Carlota Ciganda was hit with a slow-play penalty on the 18th hole of her match against Sarah Schmelzel. The penalty turned Ciganda’s one-up win into a one-down loss. Are we… enforcing slow-play policies now? Please don’t give us false hope! Leaderboard

Tiger Woods gave his first post-car accident interview to Daniel Rapaport of Golf Digest. It doesn’t seem to have been a long conversation, but here’s the key quote from Woods: “I do my routines everyday and am focused on my No. 1 goal right now: walking on my own.” Full Story

Shotgun Start: Spencer Hall joins on Brooks vs. Bryson, shorts vs. pants, and Bjorn vs. his temper

This Friday episode features a most special guest host in Spencer Hall of EDSBS and Shutdown Fullcast infamy. Is golf Spencer’s forte or area of interest? Absolutely not, but he’s as brilliant as they come and fits in well for a ramble on the heat, playing golf in pants, puka shell necklaces, his experiences covering golf up close, the current headline-making golf beef, his favorite college football beefs that became spectacles as Bryson vs. Brooks threatens to, and a quarterback he would have loved to see in these celebrity matches. A segment on current results devolves into his impressions of Fort Worth, Tulsa, and Denmark. Precision Pro Flashback Friday is appropriately on the godfather of Danish Golf, Thomas Bjorn, and his reputed volcanic temper, one that cost him two shots and a claret jug. Thanks to Spencer, an absolute internet and content-making idol of ours, for taking time to join us—if you don’t already, subscribe to the Shutdown Fullcast here. Listen on iTunes, Stitcher, and Spotify.

About the author

Garrett Morrison

When I was 10 or 11 years old, my dad gave me a copy of The World Atlas of Golf. That kick-started my obsession with golf architecture. I read as many books about the subject as I could find, filled a couple of sketch books with plans for imaginary golf courses, and even joined the local junior golf league for a summer so I could get a crack at Alister MacKenzie's Valley Club of Montecito. I ended up pursuing other interests in high school and college, but in my early 30s I moved to Pebble Beach to teach English at a boarding school, and I fell back in love with golf. Soon I connected with Andy Johnson, founder of Fried Egg Golf. Andy offered me a job as Managing Editor in 2019. At the time, the two of us were the only full-time employees. The company has grown tremendously since then, and today I'm thrilled to serve as the Head of Architecture Content. I work with our talented team to produce videos, podcasts, and written work about golf courses and golf architecture.
