What to Know About New-Look PGA Tour Championship Series Structure

Earlier this year during his first State of the Tour press conference at the Players Championship, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp introduced a new competitive model set to debut in 2028, featuring a two-track series of higher- and lower-tier events with a revamped playoff format that included match play. 

Ahead of this week’s season-ending Tour Championship, the Tour has announced some more details on what the new-look PGA Tour will look like. The main takeaway is a reimagined Tour Championship with match play over two weeks at rotating venues.

“From the beginning, the goal of the Future Competition Committee was to create an easier-to-follow competitive model for our fans with greater consequence and a stronger season-long narrative," said Rolapp via a release. "Throughout this process, we listened carefully to our fans, players and partners. One message came through clearly: the culmination of our season should be worthy of the journey it takes to get there. The result is a season-ending structure that rewards excellence over the course of the year while building toward a reimagined Tour Championship. We are creating something different, something distinct within professional golf that can resonate far beyond it."

The FedEx Cup Playoffs are out. The PGA Tour Championship Series Finale — the first of three season-ending events — is a 72-hole stroke play event that will feature the top 90 players on the season-long points list. The top 32 players on the points list after the event will advance to the Tour Championship. Here’s where it gets interesting. 

The first week of the Tour Championship will be a three-round, group-stage event, with 32 players in eight groups of four. Players will play everyone in their group in match play, and the top two from each group will advance to the following week. The championship week will be four rounds of match play to decide the champion, with all 16 players competing in all four rounds to determine the final championship standings.

The Tour will announce the full lineup of dates and venues for the 2028 PGA Tour Championship Series, including Tour Championship sites, on February 22, 2027, during a live broadcast from PGA Tour headquarters.
