U.S. Routs Great Britain and Ireland at Walker Cup
With some thoughts on the MVP's for Team USA

In what was a more closely contested competition than the final score indicates, the United States defeated Great Britain & Ireland, 17 -9, after entering the Sunday singles with just a one-point lead. The underdog GB&I side put up a strong fight in foursomes, winning the alternate shot sessions, 5-3. The Americans dominated in singles, notably winning eight of the ten singles matches on Sunday afternoon.
Though many participants are worthy of highlighting, the star of the 50th Walker Cup was Cypress Point Club itself, which showcased one of the most delightful golf-viewing experiences of the year. From the firm, severely contoured greens like on the brilliant short par-4 ninth hole to the sunbathing sea lions and idyllic Pacific Coast scenery, it’s hard to imagine a better setting for golf’s premier amateur team competition. Apparently, it also happens to be the favorite golf course of Bryson DeChambeau, who showed up to support the American side.

From a player standpoint, I’d give MVP honors to Auburn’s Jackson Koivun, who led off the American team in all four sessions and secured three points while matched up against some of GB&I’s best players. Neither of Koivun’s two victorious singles matches reached the 17th hole. The top-ranked amateur in the world continues to prove he’s worthy of the excitement he’s generated about his future.
Reigning Western Amateur champion Jase Summy also delivered three points for the United States, playing a key role in helping the Americans lock up their fifth straight Walker Cup. The Euros will try to stop the streak next September at Lahinch Golf Club. Another decent venue!
