Weekend Chat: How Extreme Is Too Extreme?

Your Club TFE comment section for the second weekend of February

Weekend Chat: How Extreme Is Too Extreme?
Weekend Chat: How Extreme Is Too Extreme?

The usual:

  • Introduce yourself if you haven’t commented before.
  • Identify the course (and hole?!) in the header image if you can.
  • Use the comment section in whatever fashion you like. It’s yours.

Club TFE housekeeping

The third wave of 2023 TFE Events—including the Backyahd at Essex County Club, the Secret Sauce at Kingsley Club, and the Hoot at Old Barnwell and Aiken GC—opens for Club TFE-only registration on Monday, February 13. HERE’S THE LINK YOU NEED.

Your Friday question

Andy’s profile of Kingsley Club, along with Club TFE member Michael Chadwick’s thought-provoking contribution to the comment section, has us thinking about extreme golf courses.

These days, wildness is en vogue among architecture enthusiasts. The adjectives “big” and “undulating” and “crazy” have become closely associated with “fun.” But there must be, at least theoretically, a limit to how much lunacy a design can have before tipping into silliness.

So for you, how extreme is too extreme? What features or dynamics make you say, or might make you say, “Yeah, this course is wild, but it’s not good”?

Are all the things Will Knights has done in the past several years just momentum from the TPC Scottsdale party pit? Thank you, as always, for supporting The Fried Egg.

About the author

Garrett Morrison

When I was 10 or 11 years old, my dad gave me a copy of The World Atlas of Golf. That kick-started my obsession with golf architecture. I read as many books about the subject as I could find, filled a couple of sketch books with plans for imaginary golf courses, and even joined the local junior golf league for a summer so I could get a crack at Alister MacKenzie's Valley Club of Montecito. I ended up pursuing other interests in high school and college, but in my early 30s I moved to Pebble Beach to teach English at a boarding school, and I fell back in love with golf. Soon I connected with Andy Johnson, founder of Fried Egg Golf. Andy offered me a job as Managing Editor in 2019. At the time, the two of us were the only full-time employees. The company has grown tremendously since then, and today I'm thrilled to serve as the Head of Architecture Content. I work with our talented team to produce videos, podcasts, and written work about golf courses and golf architecture.
