Weekend Chat: A Riviera U.S. Open?

Another beautiful summer weekend approaches. Do your thing in the comment section below.

Club TFE housekeeping

REMINDER! This month’s Club TFE hangout will take place next Wednesday, June 28, at 12 p.m. ET. We’ll create a post for questions early next week.

In the Fried Egg pro shop, we’ve restocked a bunch of hats, and some Fourth of July-themed items will be up on Monday. Remember to use code CLUBTFEMEMBER for your 10% discount.

Your weekly question

As Brendan detailed in this morning’s newsletter, Riviera Country Club has been awarded the 2031 U.S. Open. This will be the first time that the annual venue of the Genesis Invitational has hosted a major since the 1995 PGA Championship, and the first time it has hosted a U.S. Open since 1948.

A few questions come to mind:

How do you think Riviera will fare as a U.S. Open venue compared to its neighbor LACC?

What do you make of the U.S. Open’s list of future sites, and of the fact that every U.S. Open between now and 2035 has been booked?

Assuming that “the toughest test in golf” is a thing of the past, what do you think the identity of the U.S. Open should be? Or do you not accept that assumption?

Discuss.

So come on down. Thanks for supporting The Fried Egg.

About the author

Garrett Morrison

When I was 10 or 11 years old, my dad gave me a copy of The World Atlas of Golf. That kick-started my obsession with golf architecture. I read as many books about the subject as I could find, filled a couple of sketch books with plans for imaginary golf courses, and even joined the local junior golf league for a summer so I could get a crack at Alister MacKenzie's Valley Club of Montecito. I ended up pursuing other interests in high school and college, but in my early 30s I moved to Pebble Beach to teach English at a boarding school, and I fell back in love with golf. Soon I connected with Andy Johnson, founder of Fried Egg Golf. Andy offered me a job as Managing Editor in 2019. At the time, the two of us were the only full-time employees. The company has grown tremendously since then, and today I'm thrilled to serve as the Head of Architecture Content. I work with our talented team to produce videos, podcasts, and written work about golf courses and golf architecture.
