Broomsedge Enters Partnership to Establish 'Welcoming Private Club' Model
Golf Architecture and Life with Mike Koprowski
Amidst the South Carolina sandhills boom, a group began looking at land around Columbia, South Carolina, where they could create a unique kind of membership. They ultimately settled on a property in Rembert, just over 30 minutes from Columbia Regional Airport. It was there Broomsedge was born. The club sits on a unique parcel of land with somewhat of a chokepoint in the middle, a layout that has its first five holes on the southern portion of the property before the par-3 sixth connects to the remainder of the layout.
Unlike many of the clubs popping up in South Carolina and Georgia that emphasize winter getaway opportunities and overnight stays, Broomsedge is hoping to adapt a more UK style model and bring it to American golf. The idea is to have a mostly private membership with public accessibility, something very few private institutions in the U.S. offer up. With a unique and wild golf course that matches its membership philosophy, Broomsedge is offering up a different kind of experience for the modern American club.
Take Note…
Homemade. Broomsedge’s fun flagsticks are homemade by the wife of a founding member. They don’t do much to let you know where the wind is on a particular hole, but they certainly provide a unique target and Instagrammable shot.
Sedge not edge. It’s pronounced Broom-Sedge, not Brooms-Edge. You’ll find it on merchandise and be corrected by staff (in a very polite way).
RIP “The Pig.” When Broomsedge opened for preview play in 2024, the club kept an old pink barn that sat by the first tee and used it as a storage unit. Affectionately known as “The Pig,” the barn was knocked down and pieces of wood were saved and will be used in their halfway house.
