Weekend Chat Never In My Life

An endless expanse of land can really give you a sense of place. Standing on the back of the second green at Sand Hills made me feel small, I was a tiny spec in a sea of rolling hills. After tapping in for double I walked the edge of the world. The sting of the squares on my scorecard quickly dissipated. I was in the center of the maze. We stood there in appreciation of the moment, the place, and each other. It wasn’t a “Mission Accomplished” moment as much as it was a recognition of joy. Late to it, but I'm really intrigued about the concept at Hermann Park. It was probably our most-played course as my wife and I were picking up the game 5ish years ago, and I think that this vision could make it even better for that segment of folks picking up the game (which makes up a decent amount of Hermann Park's existing rounds). I like the idea of progressing as a golfer from practice area to par 3 to "full" golf all at the same facility. Next up would be to touch up Sharpstown (not too much – love those $20 walking rounds) and Houston's rota of munis would be pretty stellar.

I'll be interested to see what the club concludes in its book analyzing that very issue. Garrett mentioned the Maiden green in the video; I wonder if Raynor had gotten that far (although if it was just stick drawings perhaps not?) -- or perhaps it was an homage to him? Will be interesting to see if light gets shed on that.

After watching the Fried Egg Golf film on Cypress Point Club and listening to the Deep Dive podcast today I’m even more intrigued and interested in the history of the course and its design… I’ve learned about Seth Raynor from Garrett and Andy it makes me wonder how different the course would have been if he had lived and Dr. MacKenzie and Robert Hunter hadn’t been hired for the project.

Keegan Bradley Usa 2025 Ryder Cup Picks
August 28, 2025
There's an argument that Cantlay will need to squish any thoughts of starting any drama or never see another Ryder Cup team again he doesn't qualify top-6 for. I also hate the idea that you take somebody only because they've been on the team before. Brian Harman qualified ahead of Sam Burns and has been on the team before, as well. As did Mav McNealy. And all these guys played match play golf in college and won quite a bit. So as much as I'm giving Keegan credit for focusing on the captaincy, I'm gonna bark at him if the likes of those last few guys start to blow up.

Nicely put! Good job focus on the most important issue of Keegan keeping his promise and putting the team first. Thank you!

I have not played Cypress Point since the early naughts. What always seemed odd to me was the uninspiring 18th hole. What were Makenzie’s architectural thoughts on its design? Was he just limited in terms of the property on what he could design for the 18th hole? The rest of the course is amazing, but there is a decided letdown standing on the 18th tee. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Big coffee drinkers. We will be sure to stop by one of those pre round to get the focus going. Thanks for the extra knowledge!

Exciting! One my of my favorite shots on the course, which can fly a little under the radar, is the approach into the green on the second hole. When the pin is on the left you can really feed it in from the right. A few factors have to align for you to pull it off (a decent drive, a left pin location, etc.) but if you get the chance and execute it the feeling is pure joy. The green really rips to the left so regardless of where the pin is try to aim it a shade to the right. Hope you enjoy the round. It's a special place. P.S. If you're a coffee fan, get to Santa Cruz early and grab a coffee at Verve or, my personal favorite, Shrine Coffee.

I just joined fried egg golf today and absorbed every piece of this going into a round at Pasa with my dad this Friday. We're both high handicaps (working on it) and I'm already picturing all the great shots I'm going to hit, only to watch them slide off the false fronts again and again. Looking forward to exploring every piece of this property! Thanks for the awesome content and community! Cheers!
