Can we talk about how bad Full Swing was this season?

Did anyone enjoy it? Here were some of my biggest issues:

-We learned almost nothing about Mav McNealy. They didn’t even mention who his dad is!

-No mention of J.J. Spaun’s type 1 diabetes. That could have been really interesting if he discussed how he manages it while performing at a high level. He’s talked about it publicly before so I don’t think he would have had an issue with it.

-J.J. Spaun skateboard scene. This was so useless. They mention how he grew up skateboarding then he proceeds to not demonstrate any skill on a skateboard.

-Ryder Cup coverage was almost all bad. How do they not show the shot Rory hit after he snapped back at the crowd to “shut the F up”? Was such a cool shot and would have taken two seconds to show it. They showed almost only putts which everyone knows the greens are the least interesting part of Bethpage. They did an awful job showcasing the course or talking about the disastrous setup choices and how they made an extremely difficult course easy and it benefited the European Team. They gave absolutely no explanation or meaningful commentary to the conflict Justin Rose and Bryson’s caddie had.

Are these valid and what else did I miss?

Prospects - Fried Egg Pod

I loved the discussion about evaluating pro games and thinking about prospects. Mike Leach’s perspective on this years ago always intrigued me. He had so much success finding quarterbacks when he coached at schools that weren’t headliners. So much of that he attributed to focusing on guys who had standout completion rates, believing he could teach them systems or that they could develop other skills, but that the ability to constantly complete passes was almost an intrinsic skill.

My mind immediately went to this during the point about certain players’ ability to always get the ball in the hole. Did Brian Harman’s career peak as high as ? No, but he won the US Junior Am, played on two Walker Cups, and here we are - he’s had a very nice pro career having won a major, finished runner up in another, and won 3 other tournaments on the tour.

Schedule cadence and the PGA Championship

This came up on Monday's SGS episode, and it's been a semi-recurring talking point. While I tend to agree with Andy's point that the schedule feels too compressed and the May PGA has squeezed some traditionally strong spring Tour events (e.g. Memorial, Charlotte). But it's worth remembering that the PGA moved to May because golf became an Olympic sport. Things get pretty compressed in the summer if the PGA moves back to August, and that would only be exacerbated with the addition of the mixed event to Olympic golf.

If we want to "de-compress" the schedule between the Masters and U.S. Open, which semi-realistic option(s) would work best?

It doesn't seem like there's any appetite at the Tour to extend the schedule back into the NFL season (which I kind of miss, but you had Tiger and Phil routinely skipping the Tour Championship in its last few years with an October date). So if the tour still wants an August finish, I don't see how you can cram the PGA in there, particularly in Olympic years (and I don't think moving the PGA around the calendar during Olympic years is going to do much for it's major credibility).

Personally, I'd like August/early September to be a sleepier time in the schedule. A lot of people tend to be on vacation anyway; could kind of function like the F1 summer break, except here it'd be a time for the mules to harvest some FedEx points, That could be followed by a brief ramp up where guys get a rep or two in before the Ryder/P Cups. It also potentially makes room for a lull for the post-Masters hangover.

The fans in the 'ajor' market really turned out to watch the scrappy AON Swing 5'ers roll over the Sponsor Exemptions.

Based on FedEx Points, the Swing Five goes dormie while taking a 4-1 lead in 2026 with three events to play.

Walkout Music Suggestions

I figured I'd help PJ by starting a thread for suggestions for Zurich walkout music.

"I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy - Ryan Palmer and Chan Kim. An ode to Palmer's former partners.

"The One That Got Away" by Katy Perry - Ryan Gerard and Sudarshan Yellamaraju. Lamenting the loss of a potential Yellamaraju/Sweeney power couple.

"Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer - Jason Dufner and Austin Cook. Couple of MC merchants step out to the most famous MC song.

"Hotline Bling" by Drake - Haotong Li and Jordan Smith. This one is maybe a bit of a stretch, as it would take a rerecording by Jordan Smith to work, with new lyrics. Maybe he'd be game. The lyrics would be "I part-ner with Haotong Li/bet-ter than Jor-dan Spith"

RIP, PGA Tour Golf in Hawaii

With all the talk of re-vamping the schedule, it seemed inevitable that the PGA Tour was going to move away from starting the season in Hawaii. I guess we'll have to see what the new version looks like as a whole before passing judgment, but I'm really bummed I won't be able to watch Kapalua in January anymore.

Masters Live Thoughts

Fore Please! If you're like me, watching through work and can't hold your takes in any longer - don't! Send them here.

Early thoughts:

  • I can't express how much I love seeing Jose Maria at -2 and Potgieter at +9 through 11. Not that I'm rooting for the Poty to play poorly, just that it demonstrates what makes this place awesome. Ballspeed is not a one size solution.
  • 3 is playing spicy already.
  • A lot of people are missing putts inside 5'.

Masters Fantasy League

Hello FEGC,

I created a league on the Masters website for anyone looking to join. This is completely casual and there is no money on the line. I'm really enjoying the One and Done league and I thought this would be a fun complement to it this week. Feel free to pass this along to anymore who might be interested!

Rolapp's Scarcity Plan

This might be a stupid question, but I'm going to ask because I don't know answer.

Re Brian Rolapp's scarcity plan, why does he believe that is the path to previously unrealized financial benefits and a higher profile for the Tour?

The Tour may save operational money by eliminating tournaments but it seems to me its TV contracts are based on the abundance Rolapp wants to eliminate. The Cognizant might not attract a great field, but it did attract 2.5 million viewers for NBC. That's a number networks will pay real money for, especially in this day and age.

I'm skeptical that only playing 27 tournaments (give or take a few) is suddenly going to lead to dramatically higher TV audiences and rights fees for the tour.
