Mountain Ridge Country Club
An overlooked Donald Ross gem in northern New Jersey, despite a wonderfully varied property

From Baltusrol to Ridgewood to Somerset Hills, northern New Jersey is littered with world-class golf courses from Golden Age architects.
In this crowded neighborhood, Donald Ross’ Mountain Ridge Country Club has historically been overlooked despite its wonderfully varied property. Realizing this, the club has taken many steps in recent years to help garner the attention it deserves. First, they worked with Ron Prichard on a slower restoration project. Then, the club decided to go big and bring in Andrew Green, an architect now known for his work on championship Ross designs. With successful restorations and renovations under his belt at Inverness, Oak Hill, and Scioto, Green was tasked with bringing Mountain Ridge to its former glory. A comprehensive restoration began in 2022, allowing the property and Ross’ architecture to shine once again.
Take Note…
Take two. As was common in the early days of golf in America, Mountain Ridge was originally incorporated on an entirely different site. Very few of its members knew how to play golf, and despite efforts to build a suitable golf course on its property, the club ultimately moved to West Caldwell just 14 years after opening.
Testing the world’s best. The LPGA will visit Mountain Ridge for the second time in 2026 for the Mizuho Americas Open. The club first hosted the tour in 2021 for the Cognizant Founders Cup won by Jin Young Ko, her third victory of a five-win season.
Best he’s ever seen. Ahead of his restoration work with the club, Andrew Green told Golf Course Architecture magazine that Mountain Ridge has “the best Ross putting surfaces I’ve ever encountered.”
