Crystal Downs is not just my favorite Maxwell, but also my favorite course. I think the front 9 might be among the best in golf. Old Town Club is IMO the best course in the Carolinas. Huge Maxwell fan. Look forward to seeing Southern Hills and Prairie Dunes in ‘26! I would love to add Omaha and Dornick Hills to the trip!

Haha what a treat to share a round with another Liebenthal. I admittedly enjoy the humid warm rounds in the summer, but the most comfortable time of year has been April, September and October. Our Fried Egg trip is at the end of March ‘26 and should be lovely even if it’s a little crisp for NC.

Hey Abby! Enjoyed meeting you in Ohio and teeing it up with your brother! Southern Pines, Pinehurst 10 & Dormie Club are the trio in your area that I still want to see. We did a trip up there in March of ‘24. Outside of No. 2, we found Pine Needles, Mid Pines and No. 4 to be about a month away from quality playing conditions. What are your 3 favorite months for golf there? In South Carolina mine are May, October & September.

Have only seen a few. Favorite is Prairie Dunes. Don't sleep on Omaha CC though, great use of the heaving land with no 2 holes even remotely the same. I guess that makes my least favorite Veenker. It has so much potential, just needs Iowa State to stop mucking it up and find a donor to bring back what they can. The OG Maxwell holes are a lot of fun.

Great questions - I think if I had the choice I would play Old Town the most often slightly nudging out Prairie Dunes. My favorite hole is probably 8, 9 or 17 at Prairie Dunes. As I type this out, I think if Prairie Dunes had 18 Perry Maxwell greens it would probably be a top 10 course in the country. Least favorite that I have seen is probably Colonial although not sure how much Maxwell is really there. There is a public nine hole course in Rochelle, IL about an hour from the Western Suburbs of Chicago that has a few original maxwell greens. Very flat but worth checking out for people into architecture just for the 2 or 3 greens.

Thad Layton (for AP design) did some bunker updating on the palm course. Shingle creek was also renovated by Thad after leaving AP design

Questions About Sandbelt Golf
November 2, 2025
What are Lukas’ three favorite coffee shops? What are Lukas’ three favorite restaurants? Setting RM and Kingston Heath aside, what are his three favorite Sandbelt courses? Are there any projects happening at courses in the Sandbelt that he’s excited about? Bonus: Is there any other cluster of courses in the world that he’s feels plays similar to Sandbelt golf courses?

The book is great. And the recipes for everything on the burger are easy to follow and really good. It’s the little things. You use ghee instead of normal butter to toast the bread, the pickled purple onions are perfect and then Dad’s Sauce just ties it all together.
