I am looking forward to your take on "Match Play Courses." After the tremendous thought-provoking nuance presented in the fairness episode, I am curious the take. Traditionally, half-par holes or wide-variance holes with a lot of risk/reward are thought of as great match play holes, but it makes me wonder if that is really true. Once a ball is in the water, the hole tends to be over. Is it actually more exciting if there is still risk/reward, but also more subtlety so that you have exciting putts to win the hole? Now, a Rees course with small flat greens, narrow fairways, and typical Rees bunkering probably isn't going to provide that, but a great strategic course probably would.

Great write-up Garrett. I’m looking forward to playing it again after the renovations to the greens and bunkers. It’s a place I never get tired of playing. I didn’t know it had 4 par 5s in the opening 9 holes when it first opened. The second hole is such a great hole and would indeed make a great par 5 from the back tees now.

What's LD's golf game like? Seems like a crafty short game player. What's his on-course ribbing like?

I would like to echo the cheers for a MacKenzie course being available for public golfers. As one whose eye tends to favor bolder architecture, I hope I get to see this one someday. It amused me to see the 14th described as the "flat" hole, and then see the photos of that swale! Love your writing--it's fun to see the comparisons with Beethoven and David Lynch and still have it all make sense.

2025 Usa Ryder Cup Scripting Ralph Lauren
August 21, 2025
Look, I'll say it so the FEG crew doesn't have to shell on behalf of their sponsor. The USA Ryder Cup uniforms stink, especially when you compare this year's edition with what B.Draddy/Summit Brands rolled out for the President's Cup last year. You can create a classy-looking line of uniforms without going over the top and/or stamping a giant flag or "USA" on everything. The entire Team USA Ryder Cup branding - from the logo (not the stand-alone trophy logo, for the record - that would rock if they simply used that) that simply gets refreshed every 2 years, to RLX giving us zippers, to polos with a pattern that TipsyElves have been selling as ski suit for years (https://www.tipsyelves.com/products/mens-white-90s-retro-rip-n-sip-snow-suit) - needs a rethink. So, yeah, I guess I have feelings about this.

Jon Rahm Pga Europe Liv Golf Wins
August 21, 2025
Like all LIV golfers, I find him irrelevant unless he's competing in majors. He may claim otherwise, but the guy didn't care enough about legacy and winning. That's his call, but I don't feel the need to think much about golfers that may be talented but simply don't have the desire or will to compete with the best. It's too bad -- he had me fooled, I thought he was someone different than what he is, and golf is poorer for it -- but c'est la vie. Plenty of other talented golfers who have the drive to watch instead.

I don't think there's necessarily any way TO make a post-season that makes sense. Yes, you have the Patriots going 18-1, and fans judging that to be fair, but golf is so much more volatile than any other team sport. Tennis doesn't have a real season-ending championship that I know of. F1 doesn't really have a "last race" that determines things any more than any other race does. Etc. Playoffs for team sports make some sense, for individuals not so much. Finding a way to create meaningful golf after July doesn't necessarily have to mean "playoffs."

I've been a long-time Shotgun Start listener, but over the years, I haven't gotten to listen to every episode (unfortunately). Is there a list somewhere with all the nicknames the guys have accumulated throughout the years? It's a big ask, I get it. But, it would be a fun read. Thanks guys! I will keep up as much as I can, Rob Kimball
