2026 Fried Egg Pro Golf Survey

Our anonymous expert panel weighs in on men's golf

Welcome to the inaugural Fried Egg Pro Golf Survey. Inspired by Mike Sando’s quarterback tiers at The Athletic, Andy Johnson, Brendan Porath, Kevin Van Valkenburg, and Joseph LaMagna assembled an expert panel of golf insiders — caddies, players, coaches, network analysts, agents, and others — to share their perspective on the professional game.

Panelists submitted their ballots during the offseason, a context worth keeping in mind as you review the results. We’re excited to have participation from many of the sharpest minds in golf, with active players making up the largest segment of the panel.

We provided voters with a list of 50 golfers and definitions for four tiers (outlined below). Panelists were not instructed to place a specific number of players in each tier; instead, they were asked to include as many names as fit each tier’s definition. They were also encouraged to add players beyond the original set of 50 we provided if the player warranted inclusion. In total, 83 players received at least one vote, while 42 received a high enough average vote to be included in the finalized tiers. Next to each player’s name, you’ll see a numerical composite rating, calculated using a simple scoring system tied to the tiers in which the player received votes.

You may notice that a few of the world’s top players received an occasional Tier 5 vote, indicating that a panelist omitted them from their ballot. We followed up with panelists who left off clear top players to confirm those omissions. In the interest of data integrity, we made the editorial decision to leave all votes as submitted if a panelist did not respond with a correction. In practice, those omissions had little impact on the final rankings.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the only unanimous Tier 1 player in this year’s survey. Rory McIlroy is the only other golfer whose composite score was strong enough to join Scheffler in Tier 1. Michael Brennan and Rasmus Højgaard were the final golfers to make the cut, while Sahith Theegala was the first left out.

Following the player tiers, you’ll find responses to a series of open-ended questions. We’ve highlighted the most common response for each question along with insightful and occasionally amusing answers.

Tier 1

This is an elite player with little to no discernible weakness in his game. If he does not win a major championship in 2026, he should be disappointed.

Scottie Scheffler was the only unanimous Tier 1 vote, and his position at the top comes as no surprise.

The gap between the world No. 1 and the rest of his peers is sizable. His Official World Golf Ranking affirms that gap, as does our panel. Scheffler has won four career major championships, all since 2022. Xander Schauffele (two) is the only other golfer with multiple major wins over that time frame.

If, for simplicity's sake, you assign Scheffler a 20% chance of winning each major this season, he would have roughly a 60% chance of winning at least one major.

Scheffler is squarely in the prime of his career and dominating the world at levels we haven't seen since Tiger Woods. At least one major championship should be Scheffler's expectation this year.

Rory McIlroy is the only other Tier 1 player as voted by our panel. Nobody voted McIlroy below Tier 2. In addition to leading Team Europe to a Ryder Cup win on away soil, the career Grand Slam champion won four times individually in 2025, including his historic victory at the Masters.

Two players have double-digit top-10 finishes in major championships since 2022: McIlroy (10) and Scottie Scheffler (12). Dating back to 2009, McIlroy has recorded at least one top-10 finish in 17 straight major seasons. If he extends his streak through 2028, he would join Jack Nicklaus as the only players with 20 consecutive major seasons with at least one top-10 finish since the PGA Championship shifted to stroke play in 1958. Nicklaus' record stands at 24.

After a hot start to his career, including two major championship wins, Rahm's results have cooled off slightly over the last 24 months, at least relative to his peak. Though the Spaniard is in search of his first win since LIV Chicago in September 2024, our panel still views Rahm as the clear-cut third-best player in the world.

Clocking in at a composite rating of 1.7, Tommy Fleetwood is the highest-ranked player in the tiers without a major championship win. At age 35, Fleetwood is playing some of his best golf to date and currently holds the highest world rank (third) of his career. With one PGA Tour win and eight DP World Tour titles to his name, Fleetwood is a prime candidate to add more hardware in 2026.

In the late summer of 2023, Viktor Hovland was arguably the best golfer in the world. He'd won three times in eight starts, including the Memorial Tournament and back-to-back PGA Tour playoff events. The 28-year-old Norwegian ranks consistently among the best iron players in the world and often among the worst short game players in the world. Recent driving woes have prevented Hovland from finding the winner's circle with more frequency, yet Viktor is a force to be reckoned with when he is driving the ball well.

Only three golfers have more top-five finishes in majors than Hovland (four) does since the start of 2022. He is undoubtedly one of the best golfers in the world without a major win.

Poor driving, however, continues to plague his game. Over his last 14 major championship starts, Thomas has had just one top-30 finish.

Close followers of the sport have long tabbed Cameron Young as a potential star. Historically a top-tier ball-striker with poor putting skills, Young dramatically improved his putting in the front half of 2025.

Wyndham Clark received the 29th highest composite rating in the survey. After three high-profile wins between 2023 and 2024, including the 2023 U.S. Open, Clark's results have trended in the wrong direction. Unfortunately for Clark, he is also on the winning end of a not-so-flattering award below.

Akshay Bhatia is the 30th-highest-rated golfer in this year's survey. A two-time PGA Tour winner, the 24-year-old received a surprisingly sparse number of votes for most likely to become a superstar under the age of 25. Bhatia, who famously turned professional at age 17 in 2019, has flashed upside throughout his PGA Tour career, but he is still looking for his first top-10 finish in a major championship through nine career starts.

One of the best amateur golfers of the last 10 years, Maverick McNealy lands comfortably in Tier 4. McNealy has steadily improved since turning professional in 2017, and he is off to a fast start in 2026. The Stanford product has no career top-20 finishes in major championships and just one professional win on his résumé.

Marco Penge earned status on the PGA Tour this year through his performance on the DP World Tour last season. He won three tournaments on the DPWT in 2025, finishing second in the Race to Dubai points list behind Rory McIlroy. Though Penge was not tiered on many of our panelists' ballots, others are much more impressed by his skills, including a network analyst who placed Penge in Tier 1.

Cam Smith rose to second in the Official World Golf Ranking after winning both the Players Championship and the Open Championship in 2022. Shortly thereafter, his game began to decline.

The 32-year-old Aussie showed signs of life back in December, posting a second-place finish at Royal Melbourne in the Australian Open. His short game remains among the best in the world, but his ball-striking must improve for him to become a major championship contender once again.

Jason Day reached world No. 1 after a dominant 2015 season that featured a stretch of four wins in six starts, including a major championship and two PGA Tour playoff wins. While his short game remains world-class, inconsistent ball-striking has kept the Australian from consistently beating the best players in the world since the peak of his form over a decade ago.

With just one win since the start of the 2019 season, Day is a solid but non-threatening professional golfer.

At 32, Jordan Spieth continues to chase the form we last saw nearly a decade ago. After a decorated amateur career, Spieth burst onto the professional golf scene with immediate success, winning the John Deere Classic at 19 years old.

His 2015-2017 seasons were sensational, highlighted by three major championship victories before turning 24 years old. But since that period, Spieth hasn't been the same golfer. He doesn't hole long-range putts at the same clip he used to, and his iron play has regressed significantly. Over the last four years, Spieth has just one PGA Tour win and two top-10 finishes in major championships.

While the Australian may only have one top-10 major championship finish since 2020, he did earn a spot in the final pairing at last June's U.S. Open at Oakmont, offering hope he may have a little bit of gas still left in the tank.

As you will see in the open-ended response section below, Min Woo Lee was one of the top vote-earners for most overrated golfer in the world. He made just one of four cuts in major championships in 2025. However, with one PGA Tour win and three DP World Tour wins, his career to date is not without accolade. At 27 years old, Lee has plenty of career left to earn the respect of his peers. To do so, the speedster will need to elevate his iron play much closer to the level of his excellent short game.

In a span of seven major championships between 2021 and 2022, Will Zalatoris had three legitimate chances to win, finishing runner-up in all three. Since then, Zalatoris has undergone two back surgeries and has missed the cut in four straight major championships.

Following his most recent surgery, Zalatoris returned to action in December 2025. One of the game's premier ball-strikers when healthy, Zalatoris is beginning the journey back towards the top of the world rankings, and he'll need to earn his way into major championships this season through solid play on the PGA Tour.

Rasmus Hojgaard just barely snuck into Tier 4 in this year's survey.  He is one of just three players under the age of 25 to earn a spot in a tier this year. The 24-year-old Dane is a five-time winner on the DP World Tour and was part of Team Europe this past September at Bethpage. Though casual golf fans may be unfamiliar with his name, Hojgaard has accomplished much more than most professional golfers of his age.

Luke Clanton — a player highlighted in our open-ended response section below — finished tied for 44th, just barely missing out on a spot in Tier 4.

Auburn's Jackson Koivunstill an amateur — finished tied for 54th in voting, a little shy of earning a tier designation. Koivun was the only amateur to receive a vote.
