Paulie’s Picks: 2019 Pebble Beach Pro-Am

With the PGA Tour heading to a rain-soaked Pebble Beach, Paulie is looking at some players with stellar short games.

Paulie’s Picks: 2019 Pebble Beach Pro-Am

This week, the Tour heads to the Monterey Peninsula for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. This event is a full 156-player field with a three-course rotation for the first three rounds (final round at Pebble). The cut will be the top 60 and ties after the third round. Players will be playing Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula CC. The current weather forecast calls for cold temperatures with the potential for wind and rain. Conditions are already soft after the rains from the past week. The courses will play very long this week, and the rough might be a bit tougher than normal to play out of. With these conditions paired with the small greens, I expect there to be a larger than normal emphasis on short game. Players are going to miss greens, and the ability to get up and down for par will be very important. Now let’s dig into some players to consider for DraftKings and One-and-Done.

DraftKings

Tommy Fleetwood $10,300

Fleetwood will go overlooked this week due to his price and the fact that he hasn’t really made much noise in the golf world in 2019. With DJ at $11,400 and Day at $10,900, I expect most people to look past Fleetwood. Fleetwood is a very solid ball striker and has excelled in adverse weather conditions.

Shane Lowry $8,800

Lowry is the ultimate grinder. If the weather forecast holds, his ability to play in the wind and cold should give him an advantage this week. In the last four years here, he has finished 43rd, 14th, 41st and 21st. He heads into the event this year playing some of the best golf he has played in years. Just a few weeks ago, he captured a victory on the European Tour in Abu Dhabi. He is a very good pivot play from similarly-priced players who had success last week in Reavie ($9,000) and Grace ($8,900).

One-and-Done

Jordan Spieth

Spieth, the 2017 champion, has competed here six times and has never finished worse than 22nd. The bad weather this week should play into his hands perfectly as there will be a large emphasis on short game.

Jason Day

Day has one of the best short games on Tour, and that will be on full display this week. He has finished 11th or better in five of his last six appearances here.

Brandt Snedeker

Snedeker has had some of his best results on Tour in terrible playing conditions. He is a great grinder who is also one of the best putters on poa annua greens on Tour. He loves playing in this event with his good friend Toby Wilt, which seems to keep him very relaxed. In his last six appearances at this event, he has three top-4 finishes, including wins in 2013 and 2015.
