I play in a volleyball league that is pretty competitive, but in the offseason, the commish of the league is starting up a 5-week sim golf league, inviting people from all skill levels for screen golf. The commish doesn't know much about golf, so I'm trying to give him some tips. (For example, I asked him what the two-man format was, he said best ball. I pressed him further knowing full well he meant scramble) He claims the sim has almost any course we want and is excited to do courses like Augusta and Sawgrass. It sounds like there are going to be some beginner beginners in this. For example, they think I (an 18 index) am going to be one of the best players in the league (My teammate is a 2).

Assuming they do indeed have every course in the world, any suggestions for ones I should suggest? I was thinking Mammoth Dunes, Kapalua Plantation, LACC, Trinity Forest, anything with wide wide fairways where people won't be hating life and quit.

My biggest takeaway from the latest Yoak was that nobody was willing to just say "here's the money, do whatever you want." Like, yea, I get it, when you're investing $25 million on a golf course, you really, really need it to make money and you're likely super worried about the outcome. But what there thousands of people putting in not much at all? With 10,000 investors, you'd only need $2,500 invested per person. I mean, that's a lot of money, yes, but the point is (1) if it's an investment, it's small enough to lose, and (2) if successful, any perks from that money could probably pay for the initial investment over the lifetime of the going concern.
Now, I know finance law prohibits just asking normal folks to invest in a venture without becoming a public company, and that has non-trivial costs attached. However, the cost is low enough that I think plenty of folks would be willing to be compensated through a kick-starter structure, that is, I assume I'll get zero return on my investment, but maybe I'd get to play golf at a steep discount, or get access to a locker/bar that is otherwise private when I visit. I mean, I'd happily pitch in for a Bandon-like entity to get built if I know I'll get discounted golf and preferred access going forward. I also wouldn't care at all what the course was like, because I genuinely think pitching in for a Doak-level masterpiece to get built would be worth it.

What are some good spots to hit up in Melbourne that are a reasonable price? Has anyone taken the train out to Warrnambool for a day trip from the CBD? That seems like a fun adventure, but 7 hours on a train in a day is a lot.

Three TGL matches down and everyone has played except Jupe stinks, and we just found out tonight that their potential roster next week is some combo of Akshay, Tiger, Kis, and Max. Not the change i thought they would make but you can’t show up to practice late. Also, they announced WTGL tonight with the retired Lexi Thompson. I don’t know if I’m more surprised there is an expansion team, a women’s version of the league, or that this will last more than 2 seasons. You have to wonder if the Liv/Tour negotiations are hung up on the PIF being able to get the next expansion team. A couple other thoughts:

After heavy rainstorms slammed into the West Coast in late December, Soule Park Golf Course suffered significant flood damage. Multiple holes along the large barranca that runs through the Ojai, California, municipal course will need to be repaired or partially rebuilt.
This is the second time in three years that the course has taken a hit from rising waters. In the winter of 2022-23, portions of holes 12 and 14 were washed away. During the recent storm, the punchbowl green on the par-5 fifth hole took a particularly hard hit. Below are overhead photos of the green taken in 2022, 2024, and 2026, respectively.

Soule Park has been vulnerable to floods throughout its 60-year history. In 2005, an especially intense storm left the course in a dire state. Fortunately, as I detailed in this 2019 piece, an ambitious leaseholder stepped in to rehabilitate the property and spearhead a renovation by Gil Hanse. In recent years, the course has seen a major uptick in play and media coverage.
Soule Park is near and dear to several of us at Fried Egg Golf. I grew up in nearby Goleta, California, and my dad and I played the course frequently in the late 1990s. Today, my colleague Cameron Hurdus lives about 30 minutes away.
Cameron visited Soule Park a few days ago and sent along these notes to me:
"The plan is basically to try and recapture as much of No. 5 green site as possible and put 'something' back, but no one has been hired on the design side yet.... I think what they end up building will depend on how much land is recaptured."
"There are a lot of areas that need to be addressed — just stabilizing spots and also potentially creating dams or buffers that might reroute water downstream slightly."
"The river is getting very close to the pond on No. 1/No. 10, [and a breakthrough there] would be the worst-case scenario."
"No. 12 will need some sort of stabilizing measure to keep it from eroding more."
This is all tough to hear. But I'm glad that the current leaseholder, Keith Brown, has remained committed to keeping the course open and preserving Hanse's excellent design work. All best to Keith and the team at Soule Park in their recovery efforts.

Heading to the Land Down Under for the 2027 Australian Open next January. Will probably only be able to golf 1-2 times but was trying to lay the groundwork early in hopes of getting out somewhere world class with my FiL.

Trying to cobble something together for a long weekend mid-fall 2026 and add to my quest to play a round in every state.
The Nevada/Arizona/Utah corridor looks like an efficient way to punch three of those off the list. I have some ideas off of Google maps and basic research, but if anyone has preferences or great experiences with courses in that area, I'm happy to investigate and possibly add them to my agenda. Most likely scenario is fly into Vegas on Thursday night and out on Sunday evening, so at least one round each day. Thanks in advance.

Haven't played in a few years, but I found The Loop to be way more playable than FD. FD is a challenge off of the tee, especially on the front 9 as it plays through the forest. Both played firm and fast.

Feels very Fried Egg to rate putting greens. Both putting courses (Himalayas, Speedway at Sea Island, Punchbowl at Bandon, etc.) and just putting greens.
I would nominate Oakland Hills South for its flow to the first tee and Forest Hills in Augusta, Georgia (used by ams, college players and local pros)

Regarding the bunkers, yes, we've taken some criticism for them, which is very fair. There are quite a few that I like the look of (especially on 12 and 18 green), and some others that do look quite similar to one another. I'm not sure it's worth diving deep into an explanation of the play-by-play and how they came to look like that as it will just sound like making excuses at this point. I will say, we did focus on the gameplay aspects of the bunkers as a first priority, and it's been nice this year to see a few be quite consequential to play, especially on 1 tee, 6 tee, 15 tee and 18 green.
Great hole-by-hole analysis, Doug. But as I look at the photos I am reminded that all the bunkers look the same. What was the thinking behind making them all be round with a tongue of grass in them? To me that is a huge negative that is hard to overcome.
I remember on an old "State of the Game" podcast, Mike Clayton was asked about some course whose name I long ago forgot but I never forgot his answer, "All the bunkers are in the rough." He dismissed the course in one sentence. Bunkers matter but they should not all be the same.
Spot on with this article! Years ago, as a Standard Bearer at the Northern Trust in NJ (so bummed they took this tournament away from this market!!!), i was shocked when I pulled Phil's tee time. To that point, one of the top players I got to walk 18 holes inside the ropes with. At the start, he was very humble and appreciative, introducing himself as "Phil" like he is not one of the biggest faces of the PGA (obviously this was a tad before LIV came on scene). Unfortunately, not much else was memorable about those 18 holes. It's always nice when the players show their appreciation of the volunteers with a signed golf ball, but Phil was always a real stickler with not giving them out at the end of the round (which is totally his prerogative). Been a fringe Phil fan over the years, not much more. But he has gotten his just desserts these past few years with LIV and the negative feedback/controversy he has earned. Also, about to embark on Billy Walters book which should be eye opening regarding Phil and his "alleged" gambling. Again, great article... Sparked my trip down memory lane with him "inside the ropes".
Great read. And no one probably cares, but my perspective: I still vividly remember the joy I felt when Lefty finally broke through at Augusta in 2004, and the bewildering mix of elation and disbelief I had when he pulled off the PGA in 2021. Those feelings were genuine and true at the time, and they still resonate today.
Phil's actions (and alleged actions) since then have surely added layers and complications to those feelings, but they really haven't taken away the fond memories. For me (as a sports fans of a certain age), the 1998 Sosa v. McGwire home run chase is a close parallel. My spine still tingles when I think of that summer or when I stumble across highlights, even as the revelations over the years caused me to think (and to say) various combinations of . . . "what the fuc&?!?"
A final note: this is a whole other topic, but not a Phil fanboy here. I'm far more of a Tiger guy (a man with his own complications!), but I've also always believed more in "and" than "or". I mean, I can (and do) enjoy the music of both Prince and Metallica, the films of both Kubrick and Scott, etc.

Indeed. The Loop is much more forgiving off the tee compared to FD. Night and day really.
The greens on The Loop truly are the defense. They are fun, wild and a bit scary at times.
Thanks for the info! I’ll be driving through NJ on the 22nd so might try to play it that day. I know Mondays can be tough with work schedules, but there might be other eggheads out there that day who are attending the Long Island event the next day. If any meetup gets planned I’ll loop you in.
Hey Kevin, I just joined FEGC and saw this when scrolling through recent posts. I live in South Orange and play Byrne all the time. I’m always looking out for new people to play golf with, so let me know if you ever want to meet up! I have a kid so I try to play early on weekends when I can, but often do late mornings/early afternoons just because getting prime tee times at Byrne is very difficult.
+1 to the comment about trying the day before - this year it’s a 12 hour cancellation policy so lots of people tend to hang on until the last minute and cancel around 12-14 hours before their time.
The Loop is super forgiving. I tried really hard to lose balls and always found them. The ground game is key here though. It’s best to go in with an open mind and enjoy a different type of golf. For me that’s what made it so fun.
I feel like the Loop is going to be hit or miss in my group. It looks pretty straight forward from the flyovers, I know that doesn’t do the greens justice.
How was the course off the tee? I have some low handicaps and high handicaps.
