This week, the Tour heads to Canada for the Canadian Open. The host course, Glen Abbey, is home to some of the shortest par 5’s on Tour. I expect this week to be filled with birdies and eagles. The only protection this course has is its difficult green surrounds and bunkering. Players who have succeeded in the past at this course tend to have elite driving distance and extremely high birdie rates. I expect this to bring a lot of condensed ownership on DraftKings to those dozen or so players who are bombers and make a lot of birdies (DJ, Finau, Mitchell, etc). You will want to keep that in mind when building lineups. Here are some other players to consider for DraftKings:
DraftKings
Sergio Garcia $9,900

Garcia makes for a great pivot in tournaments this week. He is priced similarly to one of the more popular plays of the week in Tony Finau. Don’t get me wrong, I love Finau this week, but it is worth having some shares of some pivot players in large tournaments in case he fails. Sergio will go under the radar this week after missing yet another major cut at the Open. Most golf fans will see that he also missed the cut at his previous PGA Tour start at the U.S. Open as well. What many people may miss is that in between those events, he finished 8th at the French Open and 12th at the BMW International Open. A similar result would more than pay off his $9,900 salary this week.
Joel Dahmen $7,400
I expect ownership to be very condensed on the long driving birdie makers this week. Don’t get me wrong, I love this type of player this week, but in order to differentiate yourself in large tournaments, you may need to play a few players who are good pivots from those high-owned players. One great example is Joel Dahmen. Dahmen is similarly priced to Keith Mitchell and Jhonnatan Vegas, both of which (I believe) will be highly owned and deservedly so. Dahmen has been on fire lately but isn’t quite yet a popular name amongst many golf fans. He has gone 15th, 2nd, 5th and 23rd in his last 4 starts. During those 4 events, he has gained over 23 shots on approach!!!
One-and-Done
Matt Kuchar
If you have Kuchar left, he is a near must-play this week. He is fresh off a top 10 at the Open Championship. On top of that, he finished in the top 10 in three of his last four appearances at Glen Abbey.
Charley Hoffman
Hoffman is near the top of the field in par 5 scoring and has the ability to take it super deep. He is generally a very strong driver of the golf ball. He has finished 2nd, 7th, 16th and 28th in his four appearances at Glen Abbey. If you still have him left, this would be a good place to use him.
Tony Finau
Finau is known for his length, driving ability and hence, his ability to dominate par 5s. He may not have had the best success at this venue in the past, but he fits the course great and is playing some of the best golf of his early career. He has finished in the top ten in all three majors this year!! This is arguably the best spot to use Finau of all the remaining events.
