Rodney Dangerfield Fazio

We can only have so many sand scrapes, template holes and potato chip greens before it gets old. Don't get me wrong, I love Doak, C&C, Ross et al. as much as anyone, but I have yet to play a Fazio course that I didn't greatly enjoy.

The Fazio tree also produced Mike Strantz and Jackson Kahn, which is something to be thankful for.

I would love to see a few Fazio courses profiled here even though I'm sure they'll get 0 eggs.

Iowa Carton

Figured I'd start the Iowa one. I'm in Des Moines, 2 young kids, only interested in verbally fighting to better golf in the state.

I usually play sporadically outside of Des Moines at small town 9ers. They're usually pretty good and way cheaper and faster.

The Old Course

Curious what everyone's thoughts are on the changes?

I think the new tees will be hilarious during a tournament, where players will just be walking backwards constantly to hit tee shots.

Now the 16th is a welcome change and one that I would like to see happen in more places where the native has crept in and reduced fairway widths. That tee shot on 16 will be fascinating in tournaments as pushing it up the right is really a tall task.

Philadelphia Area Historic Golf

I"m from the Philadelphia area, and I love geeking out over the historic courses crafted by Golden Age architects in our area. I love researching about the Philadelphia School of Golf Course Architecture. If anyone is from the area and would be interested in playing 18 at Jeffersonville, Galen Hall, Reading Country Club, similar type of courses (as far out as the Poconos), or a private course you have access to that would fit under that, I could work to help organize the day.

Valley of the Sun (Phoenix/Scottsdale) Carton

Well - let me kick off this thread.

Name is Cristian, and I live in North Scottsdale. I have a membership at Ancala Country Club. I also love playing at the other area courses. Would love to get hooked up with other golf degenerates, Egg Heads, and Shotgunners. I am also involved in the First Tee Phoenix chapter and love supporting junior golf.

FEGC Hole Design Contest Review - November 5 at 1:00 p.m. ET

Ladies and gents,

We were really excited to unveil our Hole Design Contest alongside Andy Staples and the team at Ace Valley. More than 100 of you sent in submissions and the committee of Andy Staples, Andy Johnson, and Garrett Morrison has been sifting through them in recent weeks. Next week, on November 5 at 1:00 p.m.ET, we are going to do a live review of what they have deemed as the semifinalists. They will determine the finalists on the recording, and we will have the FEGC Community decide on the winner that will ultimately be built at the resort.

I completely agree. It would be great to see what could be done, and there are many areas (definitely including Charlotte, where I live) that would benefit from more courses, especially public. Believe it or not, I dipped my toe (very briefly) in the new course development water a couple of years back, but quickly discovered that the cost of land and associated low probability of financial success made it impractical for me. I hope we see some more private/public coalitions that can forego profit motive and build attainable new courses nearer city centers, but I don't expect to see too much of that, sadly.

I guess I'd say I'm into new public because most new is so much better than the majority of courses built in the last 70 years. I've played almost 30 new to me courses this year from high end privates to single cut small town 9ers with sand greens. I love them all but personally would love to see specifically Dream or Cabot take the best architects and build something away from their normal styles. No offense to my local parklands but they are rather generic overplanted courses with no interesting architecture and have no idea who even built the course. 😁

Absolutely. I'd be interested in seeing that as well. I was simply responding directly to the main question posed. Regarding taxonomy, that is something I am pretty interested in as well, as the sorting and grouping appeals to my brain. I'd love to see some sort of decision tree that leads to each course being definitively categorized. While it is tough to get just 2 people to agree on this sort of thing, It would be a really interesting exercise and lead to some good debate.

A good and fair point. I've personally never thought to be interested in seeing more new parkland golf because I feel I've seen enough already. But I think Mike is just interested in what some of today's most exciting golf architects would do with a modern "parkland-style" course — an understandable curiosity. That said, how far away from "parkland-style" are Old Barnwell and the Tree Farm, or for that matter C&C's redesign at the International in Massachusetts? Are those courses too wide to fit the category? Is the soil too sandy? This is why the term has always puzzled me. "Parkland" is almost more of an ethos or ambience than a definable style or type of terrain.

I share the suspicion that a lot of modern courses will evolve toward what's considered a traditional "parkland style." After all, a lot of current parkland courses started off looking like something else.

There are somewhere north of 15,000 golf courses in the United States (where many of us are based) and I would guesstimate at least half of them are parkland style. Even if it were only a quarter, that's nearly 4,000 golf courses. Ignoring (for the moment) many of the great points already made on this thread, I often wonder why we are so obsessed with new development when most of us have barely seen a fraction of what is already out there. The vast majority of courses are new to all of us. The new work will always be exciting and nowadays we can observe nearly every step of the plan & build process, but (again, in addition to points already made) maybe there is sufficient supply of parkland golf?

Out of style for new builds certainly. 3 out of 4 majors usually go to golden age parklands though. 🤷‍♂️

Agree that none are really in play, just depressing to see. Understand their business logic behind it but wish it wasnt the case or if needed lodging confined to another lodge near hole 1 or behind 18

The lots at Sedge Valley are not bad, lots on 2,3,6 are set back a lot. The lot on 18 may be visible because of the height of the tee, but it’s far from the frame of the hole. The smaller lots on 1 are closer to the hole in the first 150 yards of the hole, but they are not in play and are out of the way quickly.

In my mind one of the defining characteristics of “parkland golf” is ample amounts of maintained rough at the margins of holes. That is out of style, more often than not today you are mowing fairway to the edge of the clearing line or replanting something that can serve as a “native”. Wouldn’t the Carolina Sandhills courses be “parkland” if they had 40 yds of mown rough. Honestly, eventually I think many modern courses will evolve in that direction.

I would say usually defined by more extreme elevation change than a traditional course, usually rockier landscapes, often can be harder walks, although lots of debate about whether a good mountain course traverses the extreme elevation change in the golf holes themselves vs as a backdrop or between holes, etc. For instance Ekwanok is near the mountains but there is not much extreme elevation change on the holes compared to Fox Run at Okemo which I think is peak mountain golf. Cape Breton Highland Links I think is another perfect example, along with the two Banff area course by Thompson (althought I haven't been there myself)

Good point! I've never really lived in the mountains. How would you define "mountain golf" and what are some examples? Does it have a specific topography?
