Golf season is starting to wind down here in New England, which means my attention is turning to my other "sicko behavior" passions: cooking, wine, and the joy of hearing what others are eating.

With Boston about to get its first-ever Michelin guide, the bar has been raised all over town, and the menu options have me inspired. So I've got a couple of questions for you:

Based on my experience in other golf forums, Canada usually has its own region, so we’ll cast a wide net to start out! :)

I’m in Toronto, near the epicenter of some of our nation’s best golf (St. George’s, Lambton, Weston, Islington, etc.). While our season is unwinding, would love to see my fellow Canucks get active here over the winter months (misery loves company).

While Canada is sometimes overlooked from an architectural standpoint, we have some of the highest golf participation rates anywhere in the world! Would highly recommend a trip up here, especially at current FX rates.

Very true. LAB's have their charm, I can’t just buy what everyone else is rolling—where’s the fun in that? First, I went full hipster and picked up a Honu putter. Gave it a fair shot… but no matter how many times I tried, I could not dial in the speed off the bamboo. Felt like I was putting with a xylophone. I also picked up a zero torque Sink putter—an absolute stunner. Gorgeous enough that I’m sure it’ll seduce its way into my bag eventually. Might not make me a better putter, but at least I’ll look classy three-putting.

Yeah, I'm very curious to see the scale of the place- looks wild. Being originally from Nebraska, I can't believe how much movement I see in the pictures. My little corner of the state had a river and some roll to it, but the absolute hips, dips and drops at Landmand look unreal. I'm a fan of Dye fan - I'm lucky to get up to Kohler once a year - so it's fair to say I'm fine with a place that's built-to-purpose rather than "found," shall we say. :) But I'll keep my eyes out for manufactured versus terraformed vibes.

Landmand really is unlike anything I've ever seen. The only course that comes close in comparison is Kapalua based on the sheer size and scale of the property. On top of that, the design is quite flamboyant and exhilarating. I appreciate the approach Rob, Tad and Will took to creating something truly unique and really fun to play. One thing I'd be curious to hear from people who have played it, is if they ever feel a sense of unnaturalness to the design or if they can pick out areas where massive amounts of earth were moved to make the holes function? Side note: I worked for Rob and Tad during construction and helped to build the course so I saw first hand the enormous amounts of dirt that was moved to make the course possible. In some areas the level of the ground was moved 50+ feet up or down. When I played the course in its inaugural season I felt like most of the tie-ins were done well but I still knew where the large amounts of dirt were moved because I watched it happen. Has anyone played the course and had no idea that the landscape was dramatically altered from its raw state?

Tyler Rae renovated Northmoor Country Club's White Nine just a few years ago north of Chicago. The golf course was an original Donald Ross 18-hole routing with an additional nine holes added in the 1960s, which had been mixed and modified so heavily over the years that a restoration wasn't the route the club chose to go when bringing Tyler in. Given it is a landlocked site and the White Nine is bordered on each side by other golf holes, he was presented with more constraints than a blank slate new build typically provides. Nonetheless, I think it's a good example of what an up-and-coming architect produced on an existing parkland-style golf course. I had the privilege of seeing it once (didn't play it), and the green complexes look great.

If you go and don't go to Warren, I'll be upset! I think that would fit your argument honestly, as well as Chechesse Creek, which was built at the same time as Warren , albeit the trees there are the low country kind. Could be your best two cases of C&C doing their work on a parkland course without great land

My tree centric mind struggled with this one on Kingsley, other than those fun ones on 7 landing area left. I wouldn't count Stoatin Brae. Need to see the other Devries up there still. Leaning towards the SW Mich trip right now and might try to add on.

It feels like Michigan is a fairly good case study for modern "parkland" designs, depending on your interpretation. I think a good bit of Kingsley Club can be considered parkland, albeit dramatic parkland. The Mines and Diamond Springs too. Stoatin Brae maybe not so much. I'd be curious if others would consider The Loop a parkland design?

Great article, Morgan. You have a bright future in golf journalism. One notable course that might be part of the conversation is Muirfield Village Golf Club. When Jack Nicklaus conceived the idea and worked with his friends/financial sponsors, the residential component was critical, and at the time was very unusual. The course is incredibly well-routed through (very high-end) residences which do not in any way impair the golf experience.

Played it in July this year and was blown away. Not just the course but the variety of people out playing and community purpose were incredible. Trees certainly come into play from the back tee on 4 where you have to punch driver under trees up the hill to the Dornoch inspired green.
