Course Information

Broomsedge Golf Club

The latest development in the Sandhills of South Carolina, Broomsedge adds to a booming region of golf. While not the largest piece of land, the property features both subtle and dramatic elevation changes while featuring numerous other elements in the land. There are ridge lines, rolls of different sizes, and even a half pipe in which the designers routed the par-3 8th hole. That randomness was key to its selection as architect Mike Koprowski wanted a site that was different than other golf properties you can find in the Carolina Sandhills (Pinehurst, Aiken, and others). The resulting course is one that is not only very memorable, but one that allows for many different kinds of shots and ways to test the golfer.

For more on Broomsedge, listen to Andy Johnson's podcast with co-architect Mike Koprowski.

Old Barnwell

"The brand-new design by Brian Schneider and Blake Conant brings to life a new style and ideology for modern golf architecture. For the past 30 years, the theme of naturalism has dominated the best-regarded new golf courses. Whether or not they moved a lot of earth, the top design teams have taken pains to tie in their hazards and greens to the surrounding landscape. Schneider and Conant are doing something different. While their work at Old Barnwell is sympathetic to preexisting landforms, they also go for provocative, in-your-face contouring, some of which resembles the shaping done by Walter Travis early in the American Golden Age of golf architecture. Mounds and green contours rise up from the grade, and bunkers and other hazards come in all different shapes and sizes. Many of these make no attempt to look natural, but they all work together on the broad canvas of Old Barnwell’s property." - Andy Johnson

Aiken Golf Club

"Aiken breaks many norms associated with public golf in America. Even with one foot in the rough on every tee, Aiken stretches to a mere 5800 yards. The front nine doesn’t return to the clubhouse. It rarely takes more than four hours to play 18 holes. Players will seldom find a flat lie in the fairway, and the greens are small, undulating, and distinct from one another. The course has sandy waste areas that upscale private courses would fawn over. It’s charming, quirky, and inclusive, and it is a thread in the fabric of its town. Overall, the style of golf at Aiken GC has more of a UK ethos than an American one." - Andy Johnson
