Oh, Canada! 🍁

27, no kids, only interested in fighting folks who “don’t listen to music”.

Based on my experience in other golf forums, Canada usually has its own region, so we’ll cast a wide net to start out! :)

I’m in Toronto, near the epicenter of some of our nation’s best golf (St. George’s, Lambton, Weston, Islington, etc.). While our season is unwinding, would love to see my fellow Canucks get active here over the winter months (misery loves company).

While Canada is sometimes overlooked from an architectural standpoint, we have some of the highest golf participation rates anywhere in the world! Would highly recommend a trip up here, especially at current FX rates.

So, I've sketched out the hole to start thinking about a different design without moving too much stuff around. I have no idea what the contours are so I'm assuming it's just flat. My general thoughts are as follows: 1. It's quite clear that the holes have functionally been designed to keep players away from the roadways. This severely limits what is available to do. 2. The driving distances to interacting with the fairway hazards are nearly identical from the back tees. This is fine, but not super interesting and will advantage players that deviate from this driving distance. Par 5 thoughts: There is no functional reason to interact with the fairway bunker. Because the hole is not reachable in two, the play is clearly to lay up short or bail out long-right, and both plays end up with a nearly identical approach. If we want to reward interacting with the bunker, we first need to make the bailout right much more risky. The obvious way to do this is to add bunkering in the landing zone -- which may be fine if we're trying to actively discourage this -- but to me, the more interesting way to approach that is by adding features to the second landing zone. Par 4 thoughts: The par four is fine. The strategic architecture is perfectly serviceable. I wouldn't say I love it, but it's there. Play to the fairway bunker to have a better angle at the green. I'll think about a redesign, but for now my simple (unserious) solution, which will improve almost every golf hole, is to add a stone wall as crossing hazard (also rough surrounding bunkers is for weenies). I think the two cities closest to my heart would be great partners with the NLT: Cleveland, OH and Portland, OR. Both cities have good existing organizations operating their golf courses but could take them to the next level with the expertise of NLT. And the courses that both cities operate have a lot of history and high ceilings.

Looked at this on Google Maps. The best solution is to shift the par 4 into the second of the par 3 corridors and move that second par 3 into the space between the two holes. If you want something more concrete and sustainable in the course of an irrigation project. Need ground level perspective and how much other area. We have on the rest of the course. Fixing 2 holes is a way to have a disjointed composition. So the solution to these 2 holes might be to reroute the rest of the course better to reduce the compression of this space.

Gil loves a short par 4 with a bunker about 200 yards out, and an elevated green. Something I've seen on his courses I've played, and comes up a lot on his new builds (7 at Fields Ranch for example) and in a lot of restoration work he does. He likes to put them earlier on in the round, too.

I think Mike Strantz had his own version of templates and the button hook hole is one. These button hook holes are almost like double cape holes (a cape shot on the tee shot and approach shot). 11 at Tobacco Road 2 at Royal New Kent 12 at Tot Hill Farm (kind of) 4 at True Blue Pikewood National has a similar concept on their 8th hole, "Audacity".
